VIZIO OS is the smart TV platform on Vizio TVs. Vizio called it SmartCast from 2016 and now calls it VIZIO OS. Vizio's old SmartCast web page now carries the VIZIO OS name.

Set up

Pairing takes about a minute, once per TV. Each model line’s page has the exact TV menus.

  1. Connect your iPhone and TV to the same Wi-Fi network

    Guest networks and Wi-Fi with device isolation block local control.

  2. Pick your TV in the app and type the PIN

    Menu › System › Mobile Devices

    The TV shows a PIN the first time an app pairs. You can see and remove paired phones under Menu > System > Mobile Devices.

  3. Let the TV turn on from your iPhone

    For turn on from standby
    Menu › All Settings › System › Power Mode › Quick Start

    Older menus put it at Menu > System > Power Mode. Quick Start uses more power in standby than Eco Mode or Energy Save.

Troubleshooting

The app can't find the TV
  1. Make sure the TV and iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network.
  2. Turn the TV on. In Eco Mode or Energy Save the TV is not on the network while it is off.
  3. Restart the TV: unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
The PIN doesn't appear or is rejected
  1. Keep the TV on during pairing. Community reports say the TV can forget the PIN if it was off when pairing started.
  2. Remove old phones under Menu > System > Mobile Devices, then try again.
The TV won't turn on from the app
  1. Set Menu > System > Power Mode (or Menu > All Settings > System > Power Mode) to Quick Start.
  2. Wake only works from standby. It never works after a power cut or when the TV is unplugged.

How to use your iPhone as a Vizio TV remote

  1. Join the same Wi-FiConnect your iPhone to the same Wi-Fi network as your Vizio TV. Guest networks often keep devices apart.
  2. Pick your TV and type the PINTurn the TV on, open Simple TV Remote and tap your TV. Type the PIN the TV shows. You only do this once.

Hold Input and Mute for about 10 seconds until a light near the top flashes. Then go to Menu > System > Voice Remote, press OK and choose Pair New Remote. On some TVs you open All Settings first.

Will any Vizio remote work with my TV?

Mostly, yes. Vizio says most of its remotes control power, volume, input and navigation on any Vizio TV, though app buttons may not work on older TVs. Trying another Vizio remote is also a quick way to tell if yours has failed.

Why does my Vizio TV ask for a PIN?

The TV shows a PIN the first time a phone app pairs, so only phones you approve can control it. Type it on your iPhone once. You can see and remove paired phones under Menu > System > Mobile Devices.

About Vizio SmartCast

SmartCast started in 2016 on the P-Series, M-Series and E-Series. At first you controlled those TVs from the SmartCast phone app. On-screen apps arrived on 2016 models through the SmartCast TV update in September 2017.

Walmart bought Vizio on December 3, 2024. Walmart's own onn TVs now also ship with VIZIO OS, sold as "onn Powered by VIZIO". Current Vizio product pages say a Walmart account is required for smart TV features and updates.

Vizio does not publish a control protocol for third-party apps. The SmartCast HTTPS API is documented by the community. Pairing uses a PIN shown on the TV.
