On your TV

Turn these on once with your TV remote. Menu names can differ slightly by year and region.

    Guest networks and Wi-Fi with device isolation block local control.

  2. Pair with the PIN on screen

    Menu › System › Mobile Devices

    Pick the TV in the app and type the PIN the TV shows. Paired phones are listed under Menu > System > Mobile Devices.

  3. Turn on Quick Start (older SmartCast menu)

    For turn on from standby
    Menu › System › Power Mode › Quick Start Mode

    Eco Mode is the default. In Eco Mode the TV can't be turned on over Wi-Fi.

  4. Turn on Quick Start (VIZIO OS menu)

    For turn on from standby
    Menu › All Settings › System › Power Mode › Quick Start

    The other choice is Energy Save, which turns the network off in standby.

    Older menus put it at Menu > System > Power Mode. Quick Start uses more power in standby than Eco Mode or Energy Save.

Troubleshooting

Most problems come from the network or one TV setting. Start at the top.

I can't find my model number
  1. Press Menu, then open All Settings, System or Help (it depends on the model).
  2. Open Admin & Privacy, System Information or TV Information.
  3. Or check the label on the back of the TV or the side of the box.
The app can't find the TV
  1. Make sure the TV and iPhone are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network.
  2. Turn the TV on. In Eco Mode or Energy Save the TV is not on the network while it is off.
  3. Restart the TV: unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
The PIN doesn't appear or is rejected
  1. Keep the TV on during pairing. Community reports say the TV can forget the PIN if it was off when pairing started.
  2. Remove old phones under Menu > System > Mobile Devices, then try again.
The TV won't turn on from the app
  1. Set Menu > System > Power Mode (or Menu > All Settings > System > Power Mode) to Quick Start.
  2. Wake only works from standby. It never works after a power cut or when the TV is unplugged.

M = M-Series, 65 = screen size, Q7 = Quantum tier 7, J = 2021 model year, 01 = variant.

What is the MQX?

The M-Series Quantum X (for example M50QXM-K01) is a 2022 gaming-focused M-Series with up to 240Hz at 1080p, per Vizio.

Can the app turn my M-Series on?

Only if Power Mode is set to Quick Start. In Eco Mode the TV's network is off while the TV is off.

What about AirPlay on my M-Series?

AirPlay 2 came to SmartCast TVs in 2019. It lets you send video from an iPhone, but it is not remote control and doesn't show that our remote will work.

How do I connect my iPhone to a Vizio M-Series Quantum TV?

Put your iPhone and TV on the same Wi-Fi, open Simple TV Remote and pick your TV. Follow the prompt on the TV once, and the app remembers it.

Where is the model number on a Vizio TV?

Open Menu > All Settings > System. Then open Admin & Privacy, System Information or TV Information (the name depends on the model). The model and serial number are listed there. It’s also on the label on the back of the TV.

Can I type on my Vizio M-Series Quantum TV from my iPhone?

Yes, in most search boxes. We have not found a documented way to type into on-screen keyboards.

Why can’t the app find my Vizio TV?

Make sure the TV is on and on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone, not a guest network, and turn off any VPN on your iPhone. If it still doesn’t show up, restart the TV and your router, then check Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network on your iPhone.

Do I need an IR blaster or extra hardware?

No. Simple TV Remote talks to your TV over your home Wi-Fi. iPhones have no infrared, so TVs without a network connection can’t be controlled.

About these TVs

The M-Series is Vizio's mid-range line. It has run SmartCast since 2016. From 2019 most M-Series models use quantum dots and are sold as M-Series Quantum (M7, M8, MQ6, MQ7). In 2022 Vizio added the M-Series Quantum X (MQX) for gaming.

In 2023 Vizio replaced the M-Series name with "Quantum" (M55Q6-L4 and later). Those models are on the Vizio Quantum page.
