Troubleshooting
Most problems come from the network or one TV setting. Start at the top.
The TV doesn’t show a pairing key
- Go to the TV’s home screen, then try pairing again from the app.
- Make sure the TV and iPhone are on the same network.
- Some 2011 and 2014 NetCast models don’t allow phone control at all.
The pairing key doesn't appear
- Check the TV and your iPhone are on the same network (Network Status, see setup).
- If you have more than one LG TV, pick the right TV first; the key appears only after you choose it.
- Turn the TV off and on, then connect again.
How to use your iPhone as the remote for a 2011–2014 LG Smart TV
- Check the model numberRead the label on the back of the TV. A letter W, V, K, M, S, A, N or B after the size and the L or P (as in 47LM7600 or 42LB580V) means a 2011–2014 LG TV.
- Put the TV on your Wi-FiConnect the TV to the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone, or plug it into the same router. On 2013 TVs that's Smart > Settings > Network > Network Connection.
- Open the home screen and pick your TVTurn the TV on and go to its home screen. Then open Simple TV Remote on your iPhone and tap your LG TV in the list.
- Type the pairing keyThe TV shows a 6-digit pairing key. Type it into the app once, and your iPhone is ready to use as the remote.
Questions
Is there a old LG TV remote app for iPhone?
Yes. Simple TV Remote is a old LG TV remote app for iPhone that works with old LG TV sets running Smart Home. It pairs over your home Wi-Fi and sends real commands in a free check, so you know it works on your exact TV before you pay $5.99, once.
Can I use my iPhone as the remote for an old LG smart TV?
Yes, if it's an LG Smart TV from 2011 to 2014 that runs NetCast. Put your iPhone on the same Wi-Fi as the TV, open Simple TV Remote, pick the TV and type the 6-digit key it shows. The free check shows it working on your TV before you pay $5.99 once.
How do I know if my LG TV is a 2011–2014 NetCast model?
Read the model number on the label on the back of the TV. The letter after the size and the L (or P for plasma) marks the year: W, V or K is 2011, M or S is 2012, A or N is 2013, and B is 2014. So 47LM7600 is a 2012 TV and 42LA620V is from 2013.
My LG TV is from 2014. Does it run NetCast or webOS?
Most 2014 LG smart TVs run webOS, and those work with Simple TV Remote too. A few 2014 ranges kept NetCast: the UK LB570V, LB580V, LB585V, UB800V and UB820V, and the US LB5800. If the home screen is a full-screen Smart Home menu rather than a bar of cards along the bottom, it's NetCast.
I lost my LG TV remote. How can I control the TV?
Press the power button on the TV to turn it on, then use your iPhone as the remote. On a 2011–2014 NetCast TV you type the pairing key into the app, so you don't need the old remote to set it up. The TV must already be on your Wi-Fi.
What can the app do on my older LG TV?
It covers the everyday buttons: the arrows and OK, Back, Home, volume and mute, and turning the TV off. You also get play, pause, rewind and fast-forward, the number keys, channel up and down, and the input menu. Typing, opening apps, turning the TV on and jumping straight to one HDMI input aren't available on these TVs.
Can my iPhone turn on my 2012 or 2013 LG TV?
No. LG's NetCast TVs have no setting that lets a phone turn them on. Press the power button on the TV or use the remote, then your iPhone takes over.
What is the pairing key on an LG TV?
It's a 6-digit number the TV shows when a phone app connects. Type it into Simple TV Remote once and the TV remembers your iPhone. If you have more than one LG TV, the key appears only on the TV you picked in the app.
What if my LG TV never shows a pairing key?
Go to the TV's home screen and try again from the app. Check that your iPhone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi, not a guest network, and turn the TV off and on. A few 2011 and 2014 NetCast models don't allow phone control at all, and the free check tells you before you pay.
How do I connect my older LG TV to Wi-Fi?
Open the network menu with the remote. On 2011 TVs it's Home > Setup > Network > Network Setting, on 2012 TVs Home > Settings > Network > Network Connection, and on 2013 TVs Smart > Settings > Network > Network Connection. Join the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone, or plug the TV into the same router.
How do I change the input on an older LG TV from my iPhone?
Tap the input button in Simple TV Remote to open the TV's input menu. Move to the input you want with the arrows and press OK.
Is my 2014 LG TV NetCast or webOS?
Most 2014 LG smart TVs run webOS. The UK LB570V, LB580V, LB585V, UB800V and UB820V and the US LB5800 kept NetCast. If your TV's home screen is a full-screen Smart Home menu rather than a bar of cards, it's NetCast.
About these TVs
These are LG's Smart TVs from before webOS: LED and plasma ranges from 2011 (LW, LV, PZ), 2012 (LM, LS), 2013 (LA, LN) and the 2014 ranges that kept NetCast.
In 2014 most LG smart TVs moved to webOS 1.0. LG UK's spec sheets show LB570V, LB580V, LB585V and the 4K UB820V and UB800V still on NetCast (SmartHome, App Store and Game World). In the US, LG's LB5800 spec sheet lists Smart Home, while LG's support pages name LB6300 and up as webOS.
LG's US support pages list each set as a Smart TV; the sizes on this page come from those pages and from LG UK's archived product pages.
