Troubleshooting
Most problems come from the network or one TV setting. Start at the top.
The TV doesn't show a code
- Check that your iPhone and the TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network.
- Make sure the TV has finished Google TV setup.
- Restart the TV: hold the power button on the remote until it restarts, then try again.
The app can't turn the TV on
- Set Settings > Network & Internet > Remote start to On (Powered on by apps).
- Turn the TV off with the remote, not at the wall.
- If the TV is on Wi-Fi and won't wake, try an Ethernet cable.
The TV turns itself on
- Sony's support pages suggest setting Remote start to Off if the TV turns on by itself and you don't need to wake it from your phone.
The TV doesn't appear in the app
- Make sure your iPhone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, not a guest network.
- Allow Local Network access for Simple TV Remote in iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Local Network.
- Restart the TV: unplug it, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in.
- Check that the TV is a Google TV or Android TV. TVs with only Chromecast built-in can't be controlled this way.
No pairing code shows on the TV
- Turn the TV on and leave it on the home screen; the code only shows while the screen is on.
- On the TV, update Android TV Remote Service: open Google Play on the TV, search for "Android TV Remote Service" and choose Update.
- If it still fails, go to Settings > Apps > Show system apps > Android TV Remote Service and choose Force stop, then Clear storage. Then pair again.
The app asks to pair again every time
- Clear the storage of Android TV Remote Service on the TV (Settings > Apps > Show system apps > Android TV Remote Service > Clear storage), restart the TV and pair once more.
- Give the TV a fixed address in your router so it doesn't change after a power cut.
The TV won't turn on from the app
- Wake works only from standby. A TV that was unplugged or switched off at the wall can't be woken over Wi-Fi.
- Turn on your TV maker's network standby setting. See your TV's page for the exact menu path.
- On Android TV 14 sets, a low-power energy mode may turn the network off in standby. Choose a mode that keeps the network on.
- If the TV uses Ethernet, try Wi-Fi, or the other way round. Some TVs only wake on one of them.
Volume doesn't change on a Chromecast, Google TV Streamer or SHIELD
- Turn on HDMI-CEC on your TV and on any soundbar or receiver in between.
- On the streamer, set Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Set up remote buttons > Volume control to "Auto (CEC)".
How to use your iPhone as a Sony BRAVIA remote
- Join the same Wi-FiConnect your iPhone and the TV to the same home Wi-Fi network. Guest networks often keep devices apart.
- Pick your TV in the appOpen Simple TV Remote and choose your TV. The free check runs on your own TV before you pay.
- Type the code from the TVThe TV shows a short code the first time. Type it on your iPhone once, and the app remembers the TV.
- Let your iPhone turn the TV onOptional: press Quick Settings, open Settings > Network & Internet > Remote start (UK: Network and Internet) and choose On (Powered on by apps). It works from standby only.
Questions
Is there a Sony BRAVIA Google TV remote app for iPhone?
Yes. Simple TV Remote is a Sony BRAVIA Google TV remote app for iPhone that works with Sony BRAVIA Google TV sets running Google TV. It pairs over your home Wi-Fi and sends real commands in a free check, so you know it works on your exact TV before you pay $5.99, once.
How do I turn on a Sony BRAVIA without the remote?
Press the power button on the TV itself. Sony's printed Reference Guide or Setup Guide shows where it is on your model. On models with only one button, pressing it also opens a small menu. If Remote start is on, your iPhone can turn the TV on from standby too.
How do I pair a Sony BRAVIA voice remote?
Open Quick Settings > Settings > Remotes & Accessories > Remote control > Connect via Bluetooth > Connect a new remote, and follow the steps on screen. Menu names can differ by model and year. If the remote can't open the menu, Sony says another Sony TV remote can, and your iPhone can too.
How do I reset a Sony BRAVIA remote?
Take the batteries out, press the remote's power button for three seconds, then put in new batteries. Sony says this clears problems from poor battery contact or static.
Why does my Sony remote only work up close?
Remotes with a MIC or Google Assistant button use Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi routers and microwaves can interfere. Clear the path to the TV, turn off other Bluetooth devices, and pair the remote again. Sony suggests keeping routers and microwaves about 33 feet (10 m) from the TV.
How do I restart a Sony BRAVIA?
Hold the power button on the remote for about 5 seconds until the TV restarts. Without a remote, unplug the TV, press the power button on the TV once, wait 2 minutes and plug it back in. Your settings aren't lost.
How do I connect my Sony BRAVIA to Wi-Fi without the remote?
You need a remote or the TV's own buttons for that step. Phone apps, including Simple TV Remote and Google's, can only find a TV that's already on your Wi-Fi. Sony says another Sony TV remote can open the menus, which is handy here. After that, your iPhone can take over.
Why does my Sony TV turn itself on?
Remote start can let devices on your network wake it. If you don't need your phone to turn the TV on, set Settings > Network & Internet > Remote start to Off. If you want your iPhone to wake it, leave it on.
Can I use the Google TV app as a Sony BRAVIA remote?
Yes. Google's free Google TV app works as a remote on iPhone: tap TVs nearby, pick your TV and type the code it shows. Simple TV Remote is a simpler, remote-first option with big buttons, a keyboard and no account, for $5.99 once after a free check.
Can my iPhone turn on a Sony BRAVIA TV?
Yes, from standby. Turn on Settings > Network & Internet > Remote start (UK: Network and Internet), and choose On (Powered on by apps) where offered. Works from standby only, not after the TV is unplugged. No app can turn on a TV that is unplugged.
Which Sony TVs have Google TV?
Every Sony BRAVIA series from 2021 onward: J (2021), K (2022) and L (2023) models with XR- or KD- codes, and the BRAVIA 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 ranges from 2024 with K- codes.
How do I let my iPhone turn on my Sony TV?
Open Settings > Network & Internet (UK: Network and Internet) > Remote start and choose On (Powered on by apps). It only works from standby.

Simple TV Remote is built on Google's Android TV remote service, which Google TV includes. The TV shows a code the first time you connect, and you type it on your iPhone once.
To turn the TV on from your iPhone, Sony's help guides say to set Remote start to On (Powered on by apps). It is under Settings > Network & Internet in the US and Settings > Network and Internet in the UK and Europe.
